Ceramics, china, pottery, glass... bowls, plates, cups, vases... from antiques to retro to modern pieces. Love it. From when I was little Mum would take me to the china section in Myers to admire the dinner sets, tea pots, vases. I learnt quite early what patterns were Wedgewood and which were Royal Doulton and I have always been surprised when people don't know the difference between 'good' china and the not so good. It's just so much nicer to eat off, drink from... feel, look at. Not that my cupboard is full of expensive dinnerware... but I'd love it to be.
So, this post is called 'Onions' and you may be asking why? Well, I've started to collect vases made in the 1960's and 1970's in a West German pottery factory called the Scheurich factory and the name of the pattern is ONION. So there you go, all explained.
I've only got five, but it's not about instant accumulation. It's about the search, the thrill of the hunt, seeking, finding, gathering.
As I write, I have two more in transit. Oh the wonders of ebay. Another white small one with black under the white glaze coming from the UK and a green one of the same size coming from Germany.
Rod is quite pleased about this collection as it's MUCH cheaper than my plan to collect Moorcroft vases. He thinks two will do.
We had Rod's sister staying with us last week, who also has the same weakness, and I took her to an antique centre here in Brisbane. This place holds a lot of... stuff...
No onion vases. But these things caught my eye...
A German pin tray with nude, 1920's, $625.
Coloured glass from $14 a piece.
A pineapple jug, $42 which I might just go back for.
I won't, however, be going back for this fellow...
And I simply don't have the time for this... clock...
Actually, the more I look at it, the more it speaks to me... I wouldn't have it in my home... or would I?... I appreciate it somehow. Hmmmm, $60, hey?
And then there's the hand embroidered and crocheted doilies and table linens.
The hours of work that would have gone into these glory box fillers, now for sale in an antique store and so under priced for the amount of work that's gone into them.
All that scouring for onion vases was tiring. We needed refreshment.
My search continues. Hello, ebay.
