Five years ago, at about this time, I was giving birth for the first time. Wow. Yes, it was about... where's the clock... ok... NOW, that the primevil scream erupted from me without any pre-empting. I had never before or since made such a noise. Rod said he now knew what a banchee sounded like. I felt I needed post traumatic stress counciling. Three. There were three banshee screams, one for each of the last three pushes. Youchie. And out came the boy that I thought was going to be a girl.
Tom. Not Thomas, just Tom.
We've had our ups and downs, Tom and I. I'm not sure whether he was a difficult 2 year old or I was an hormonally insane postnatal 37 year old. Maybe a bit of both. We seem to have found level ground though. I'm trying for the next sentence but words can't explain how elated and proud I am to have him as my son.
And now he's five (5). Once again we did the two party thing (one with friends and one with just our family). I was SOOOOO busy last week with one thing and another that I was looking for short cuts wherever there was one. The freezer was loaded with pre-made patty cakes and the cake, baked and ready for assembly friday night.
(Thanks, Jonathan (nefew and cousin) for fantastic 'pin the sword on the priate'.)
The cake was a number 5 (five) iced up to look like a pirate island... UNFORTUNATELY, I don't have a photo on my camera. A photo was taken, however, and I'll endevour to post it to nest.
OF COURSE, I had to make two (2) cakes. But due to being so pushed for time and my brain capacity was nearing it's limits, I decided on an ICECREAM CAKE. So after I did the shopping in a rush friday afternoon and while the icecream was still soft from the ride home in a hot car, I mixed a tub of vanilla with a bag of Smarties. WHACKED it (oh, there was no ceremony about this) into a glad wrap lined bowl and THREW it (gently) into the freezer. CAKE #2, DONE!
So, today, at the family party, out came the icecream cake (which started to melt immediately due to the hot day) which I up turned onto a plate and smothered with IceMagic (which didn't go as hard as it should... due to the hot day).
Look at it melting. Look at the finger marks where children sneaked a taste when they thought we weren't looking. Yeah, it was hot in Brisbane today. Icecream cakes are probably better suited to cooler climes.
Happy birthday, my special boy.
